The third American World Exhibition was intended to make a contribution to the education of the “ideal citizen”. In the classification system of the St. Louis World Exhibition, therefore, teaching occupied the most important position. That this emphasis on education could serve to justify colonial expansion was manifestly demonstrated by the erection of an “Indian school” and an exact copy of a
Philippine village. With the third Olympic Games taking place at the same time, sport also played a significant part in this show of man’s cultural achievements. The classical exhibition palaces and “Pavilions of the Nations” did not have much exciting architecture to offer since the basic structures were only conventionally covered with
Plasterboard.
