The history bus

Nation: Pakistan
National Day: 14.08.00

What catches a visitor's eye first about the Pakistani Pavilion is a colourfully painted bus just like the thousands of busses which traverse the country. The drawings on the bus portray scenes from the nation's history. The four most important provinces of Pakistan present themselves aound the bus: Punjab, Baluchistan, Sindh and NWFP (North West Frontier Province).

At kiosks modelled after the historic architecture of the regions visitors can watch artisans at work. Workshops are also offered which give them the opportunity to learn how to tuft carpets or how to make bronze jewellery. Another key aspect of the presentation is orientation towards the future. Projects to prevent child labour, programmes to improve environmental protection in industry and to create new jobs illustrate how traditions and evolution can complement one another.
