The Paris 1900 World Exposition
Visited by 50 million people, this review of the century just ended was one of the most successful world exhibitions ever organised. In the summer of 1900, on a four-part site along the Seine in Paris, a retrospective of superlatives was presented. Covering technology and the arts and sciences, the experienced French world exhibition planners unfolded an enormous panorama dedicated to the progress that had been made in the previous few years. The exhibition offered so much of everything that it was given the nickname “World Junk Shop”. There were no architectural landmarks or works of master craftsmanship to admire in Paris. In a colourful jumble of styles, everything was copied. Prominent above all in this respect were “stage sets”, made of papier maché and plaster, for industrial products and for the 43 participating countries |
