Introduction

To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America, this world exhibition was put on – as had already been done in 1929 – under the motto “The Birth of a New World”. The island of “La Cartuja” close to the old town, from where Columbus set off on his journey to the new continent, offered an ideal site. Sevilla was turned into an large, ultra-modern city for the purposes of the exhibition, with the creation of a new traffic system and extensive re-building. To justify the enormous cost, it was decided that some of the spectacular, high-tech pavilions should continue to be used as part of a Technology and Science Park when the exhibition was over – a plan that has still not been completely realised.
