Introduction

The largest world exhibition on the continent of America also attracted the most visitors. However, Expo '67 in Montreal also cost a very great deal more than its predecessors. Thanks to a well-chosen motto, which placed the focus on man's areas of activity, the Canadians ensured lively participation by nations and exciting theme exhibitions. On two islands in the middle of the St. Lawrence river, a richly structured exhibition site, which was designed down to the smallest detail, offered attractive building locations for the national pavilions. The architecture of the world exhibition was shaped by light-weight space frames, filigree reticular roofs and large glass domes, which however did not always harmonize with the fixtures and fittings for the exhibits under them.
